Swedish Massage
Swedish Massage is the most commonly offered and best-known type of massage. During Swedish massage, the massage therapist uses massage oils to facilitate smooth, gliding strokes called effleurage. Other classic Swedish massage moves include kneading, friction, stretching and (sometimes) tapping.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders. Some of the same strokes are used as classic massage therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain.
Sports Massage
Sports massage was designed for athletes, but is useful for anyone with chronic pain, injury or range-of-motion issues. Sports massage emphasizes prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons. The massage therapist generally concentrates on a specific problem area to stimulate circulation of blood and lymph fluids.
Reflexology Massage
Reflexology is an ancient healing art based on the principles that there are reflexes in the hands and feet that correspond to every part, organ and gland in the body. Stimulating nerve endings in these extremities has an effect on the whole body's nervous system, which promotes healing.
Neuromuscular Massage
Neuromuscular massage is an intense form of bodywork that consists of focused, concentrated massage on one specific area of the body. The theory behind neuromuscular massage is that when a muscle spasms it is caused by a spasm in a very centralized area of the muscle, which may then reverberate to other areas of the muscle, causing pain and resulting in a vicious cycle of soreness and pain which can continue for years if unabated.
